Qatari weightlifter Fares Ahmed Jaber delivered a standout performance at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships in India, setting new personal bests and strengthening his bid for a podium finish against some of Asia’s strongest competitors.
Competing in Group B of the Under-20 110kg and Under-17 +94kg categories, Jaber topped his group after producing career-best lifts across all disciplines. The rising Qatari athlete recorded 160kg in the snatch and 203kg in the clean and jerk, achieving a total lift of 363kg and establishing new personal records in each category.
The championships, being held in Gandhinagar, India, have brought together 172 athletes representing 28 national federations, making this year’s edition one of the most competitive on the continental calendar. Final medal standings will be confirmed following the conclusion of Group A competitions.
Jaber’s performance earned praise from Mohammed Youssef Al-Mannai, First Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and President of the Qatar, Arab, Asian and Afro-Asian Weightlifting Federations. Al-Mannai highlighted the athlete’s technical development and described the result as an important milestone in his sporting journey, particularly given the presence of world and Olympic champions at the event.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s hopes remain high as weightlifter Wissal Yakhlaf prepares to compete in the women’s +86kg category. Yakhlaf arrives in strong form after a remarkable run of success, having secured multiple gold medals across regional and international competitions over the past year.
With promising young athletes continuing to make their mark on the continental stage, Qatar’s weightlifting programme appears to be building momentum for the future.
