Qatar is mourning the passing of Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died on 12 July 2026 at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped the nation and elevated its standing on the global stage.

Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad led the country from 1995 to 2013, overseeing a period of remarkable economic growth, institutional development and international influence. Under his leadership, Qatar harnessed the potential of its natural gas resources, launched Al Jazeera, established the Qatar Investment Authority, introduced key political reforms and unveiled Qatar National Vision 2030—a long-term roadmap for the country’s sustainable development.

His tenure also marked Qatar’s emergence as a global destination for diplomacy, culture and sport, culminating in the successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the first to be held in the Arab world.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad made history by voluntarily transferring power to his son, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, ensuring a smooth generational transition. As Father Amir, he remained a respected national figure whose vision continued to shape Qatar’s progress.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his enduring legacy lives on in the modern, ambitious nation he helped build.
