From his food & beverage beginnings to leading hotels across several international markets, Wael Maatouk, Area General Manager of Hilton Doha, has built his career from the ground up. With a career shaped by diverse hospitality environments and a strong focus on people, performance and service, Maatouk brings a considered approach to leadership and the evolving expectations of today’s traveller.
As Hilton Doha enters an ambitious new chapter, Maatouk speaks to Qreate about what continues to drive his passion for hospitality, what makes Doha special, the ingredients of a memorable hotel experience and the transformation taking place at the property.

Qreate: What keeps you passionate about hospitality?

Wael Maatouk: For me, it comes down to the people, the pace and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference every day. Hospitality is one of the few industries where leadership, commercial performance, and human connection come together so closely. I enjoy building strong teams, developing talent, and seeing people take ownership of their roles. I am equally motivated by the constant evolution of our industry and the expectations of today’s traveller. There is always something to improve, whether it is the guest experience, the operation, or the way we lead our people.

Qreate: What makes Doha special to you?

Wael Maatouk: Having worked across several international markets, I particularly value Doha’s balance between heritage and ambition. The city has developed at remarkable speed, yet it has retained a strong sense of identity and a genuine culture of hospitality. From a business perspective, it is an increasingly sophisticated destination with significant potential across leisure, business, and events. What I appreciate most is the opportunity to contribute to that growth while working within a culture that places real importance on generosity and personal relationships. That combination makes Doha a particularly rewarding place to lead a hospitality business.

Qreate: What defines a memorable hotel experience?

Wael Maatouk: The strongest experiences are rarely defined by one particular element; they are created through consistency, personalisation and genuine care. A guest may remember the design or the food, but what stays with them is how the team made them feel. That requires colleagues who are engaged, empowered, and attentive to the details that matter. As leaders, our responsibility is to create the culture and environment that enables those moments to happen naturally. When operational excellence is combined with authentic human interaction, the experience becomes distinctive, and that is what builds loyalty.

Qreate: What’s new at Hilton Doha?

Wael Maatouk: We are currently taking Hilton Doha through an important transformation that will shape the property’s next chapter. The phased programme includes enhancements across guest rooms, public areas, meeting spaces, and several of our facilities and experiences. Our objective goes beyond a physical renovation; we want to elevate the overall proposition while preserving the character and strengths that have established Hilton Doha in the market. Throughout the process, maintaining operational excellence remains a priority. Guests can expect refreshed spaces, enhanced experiences and continued investment in service, dining and the overall guest journey.

Qreate: What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

Wael Maatouk: One principle that has stayed with me throughout my career is to remain curious and never assume you have finished learning. Every market, property, and team brings a different perspective, and some of the most valuable lessons come from listening to the people around you. I would also emphasise the importance of being adaptable. Hospitality is constantly evolving, and effective leaders need to evolve with it while staying grounded in their values. Build strong relationships, understand your operation, invest in your people, and remain open to change. Those principles have consistently guided my own career.
